ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Division III No. 8-ranked Macalester College water polo team came away with two wins as the Scots hosted the first day of the final 2019 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III-West Region tournament. The Scots beat Austin College, 8-6, and Carthage College, 9-4, in moving to 6-0 and locking up the No. 1 overall seed for the CWPA Division III Championship on Friday-Sunday, April 12-14, at Connecticut College in New London, Conn.

In the win over Austin, the Scots fell behind 2-1 in the first quarter. The Scots first goal of the game was tallied by senior Lucille Moran (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron). But Macalester pulled ahead in the second quarter with two more goals from Moran and another by senior Natalie Hoffman (Seattle, Wash./Inglemoor).

Up 4-3 going into the third quarter, a goal apiece by  first year Annika Krueger (Emerald Hills, Calif./Sequoia) and sophomore Cara Mullery (Palmetto Bay, Fla./MAST Academy) set the Scots up with a 6-4 lead. Despite Austin answering with two goals in the fourth, Macalester sealed the 8-6 win with goals by Mullery and junior Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore./Central Catholic).

The Scots took a quick 3-1 lead over Carthage College today in the first period. Mullery tallied two goals and Moran scored one. The Scots continued to outscore the Lady Reds as Galasso scored two goals in the second along with a goal by first year Riley Waters (Portland, Ore./St. Mary’s Academy).

Going into the third quarter up 6-2, the Scots defense shutout Carthage while adding another goal to the scoresheet from Moran.

Galasso finished Carthage off in the fourth quarter with two goals and the Scots won 9-4.

Senior goalkeeper Courtney Overland (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) tallied eight saves in the Scots second win of the day.
