BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Division III No. 8-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) water polo team snapped a five-game skid with a 16-11 Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) road win at Long Island University.
The Sharks struck first with a penalty shot goal before goals from Rick Lundh and Caspar Lightner gave MIT the lead. LIU tied the match with 4:15 on the clock, but the Engineers rattled off four consecutive goals to take a 6-2 lead after eight minutes of competition.
The teams exchanged goals in the second quarter with the teams going to half with the Engineers holding a 9-5 advantage.
The third quarter saw the same back-and-forth play before the Engineers scored the last two goals of the quarter. Lundh and Adam Ivatorov accounted for the three MIT goals as they went into the final quarter of play holding on to a 12-7 lead.
After Lightner gave MIT a 15-9 lead at 3:34, LIU scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to four. A goal from Kunal Rajadhyax with 32 seconds left sealed the 16-11 win.
Lundh led the way with five goals followed by Lightner with four. Lightner leads the team with 42 goals this season.
Derek Schaffer paced the Engineers with four assists followed by Rajadhyax with three.
Armaan Gill made nine saves in net.
