VILLANOVA, Pa. — Division III No. 8-ranked New York University grabbed a 1-0 lead with 1:57 left in the first quarter, expanded the margin to 3-0 by halftime, saw its lead dwindle to 3-2 by the conclusion of the third quarter and outscored Division III No. 7 Carleton College by a 4-0 count over the seven minutes of the fourth quarter to hold on for a 7-2 win on the opening day of the 2019 Women’s Division III Collegiate Club Championship hosted by Villanova University.
- NYU snagged the early lead thanks to a strike by Rachael Moore (Jr., London, U.K.) with 1:57 remaining in the first quarter. The margin expanded to 3-0 by halftime as Moore (6:39) and Rachael Ho (So., Burbank, Calif.) (3:22) swished chances in the second quarter to stake the Violets to a 3-0 margin by the break.
- Carleton rallied back, however, as Eesha Shah (Fr., Cedar Falls, Iowa) and Grace Marshall (Jr., Horsehead, N.Y.) ripped in back-to-back goals at the 1:51 and 1:17 marks of the third quarter to inch the Righteous Babes within one at 3-2 heading into the fourth quarter.
- The comeback try would come up short, however, as Dylan Miler (Gr., Seattle, Wash.) connected on natural goals (6:45, 1:00), while Moore put away penalty shot (5:12) and even-strength (4:38) tallies, to account for a 4-0 flurry by NYU over the final seven minutes to snag the win.
- For NYU, Moore earned Player of the Game accolades with four goals, while Miller chipped in a pair. Ho accounted for the remaining goal.
- Shah and Marshall combined for Carleton’s two goals.
- New York shot one-for-four on man-up chances with Carleton failing to convert on three power-play opportunities.
- Due to the win, NYU improves to 1-1 in Bracket B competition to finish second in the bracket. The team will continue play on Sunday, April 28, at 10:20 a.m. against the second place finisher in Bracket A in the Third Place game.
- The loss drops Carleton to 0-1 in Bracket B as the team will take on Division III No. 5 Middlebury College at 6:40 p.m this evening.
