BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Five Mercyhurst University men’s water polo players are among 2,901 student-athletes named 2016-17 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes.

Gene Bilbao (Jr., Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin), Philip Jenny (So., Lawrenceville, Georgia/Collins Hill), Ryan Mercando (So., Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), Joey Ryan (Sr., Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and Michael Lawson (Sr., Perkasie, Pa./Penn Ridge) all garnered acolades as student-athletes must maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average or better to be named a scholar-athlete.

A total of 2,901 PSAC student-athletes were named scholar-athletes this year. The number represents a new league record, surpassing the previous record of 2,818 set last year. The figure also represents 41 percent of all student-athletes in the PSAC, setting a new league record.
