PRINCETON, N.J. — With two tough opponents on Sunday’s schedule, the Fordham Univeristy water polo team knew they would be in a battle all day on the final day of the Princeton Invitational, facing off with Santa Clara University and No. 9-ranked Harvard University at the Princeton University Invitational.
In game one, Santa Clara’s Mac Carey scored with one second left in regulation to lift his squad past Fordham, 14-13.
Fordham had the better of play to start the game, leading 4-3 after the first quarter, 9-6 at halftime, and 11-8 after three periods.
However, Santa Clara mounted a furious comeback to take a 12-11 lead in the fourth quarter with 2:17 remaining. Jake Miller-Tolt scored the tying goal at 12-all, as well as at 13 all, to put Fordham on defense with 21 seconds left. Carey then scored the game-winning marker with one second left for the 14-13 win.
For Fordham, Miller-Tolt finished the match with seven goals and three assists for his first career 10-point game. He also added four steals and two blocks defensively. Philip Wang added two goals and an assist with Magnus Sims having a goal, an assist, and three steals. Diego Delgado, Ian Watson and Sam Wheeler rounded out the Fordham scoring with one goal each. In net, Patrick Coffey posted 10 saves.
In match two, Fordham fell to Harvard by a 15-10 count.
The Rams stayed with the Crimson through the first half, trailing 6-5, but a five-goal outburst by Harvard in the third quarter gave the Crimson the cushion they needed for the victory.
For Fordham, Miller-Tolt and Joseph Agabs each had two goals and two assists with Agabs adding three steals. Sims and Watson each had two goals with Wang and Will Smoot accounting for the final two tallies. In net, Coffey and Bailey O’Mara split the game with Coffey making seven stops and O’Mara having two saves and a steal.
