BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Former University of Michigan athlete Abby Andrews shot five-for-eight as Australia outlasted Italy, 19-15, on Sunday, July 13, during the second day of women’s competition at the 2025 World Aquatics Championship in Singapore, Republic of Singapore.

Andrews, who did not compete in Australia’s 34-2 defeat of host Singapore on Friday, July 11, helped Australia top Italy as the Aussies led 4-3 and 8-5 at the conclusion of the first and second quarters, respectively, prior to pulling away 14-9 by the end of the third quarter.

She shot three-of-five on action shots and buried two-of-three man-up chances to accompany a field block in factoring on both ends of the tank for the Ord Minnett Aussie Stingers which improved to 2-0 in Group A. 

Australia will wrap-up play in Group A at 5:35 a.m. Eastern/2:35 a.m. Pacific on Tuesday, July 15, against New Zealand.  New Zealand enters the game with a 1-1 mark as the team defeated Singapore (22-7 W) and suffered a setback versus Italy (14-9 L).

Her World Aquatics Championship performance continues a trend of international excellence for Andrews who helped Australia take the Silver Medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

She competed for Michigan during the 2019 season and registered 57 goals, 71 assists and 47 steals with a 41-for-50 mark in sprints during the span of 32 games.  A member of the 2019 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion Wolverines, she claimed CWPA Rookie of the Year and Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Honorable Mention All-America honors during her lone season in Ann Arbor.  A 2019 CWPA All-Conference Second Team pick, she received Rookie of the Tournament and First Team All-Tournament recognition at the CWPA Championship prior to helping the Maize & Blue reach the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship quarterfinals.
