BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Sophie Jackson (Sr., West Yorkshire, England/The Crossley Heath Grammar School), Alison Lock (So., Superior Township, Mich./Skyline), Kasey Umlauf (So., Northfield, Ill./New Trier Township) and Fiona Young (Fr., Orinda, Calif. Miramonte) of the University of Michigan women’s water polo team are among 94 Wolverines to earn 2021-22 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition for their work in the classroom over the last academic year.

The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honor goes to student-athletes who recorded a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year. Michigan’s 94 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars mark the sixth straight year with at least 70 honorees.

Of Michigan’s 94 honorees, 14 student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA for the 2021-22 academic year.

U-M had 171 fall Academic All-Big Ten honorees, 116 in the winter and 220 in the spring, bringing the academic year’s total to 507 for a new department record.

Overall, women’s water polo tied for the ninth most honors with women’s tennis (four) and volleyball (four) as the trio trailed men’s gymnastics (six), women’s lacrosse (five), rowing (10), men’s soccer (five), women’s soccer (seven), women’s swimming & diving (11), men’s track & field (nine) and women’s track & field (12), while topping baseball (one), field hockey (two), football (two), men’s golf (one), women’s golf (two), women’s gymnastics (two), men’s lacrosse (two), softball (two), men’s swimming & diving (one), men’s tennis (one) and wrestling (one).
