WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Golden Knights of Gannon University picked up a pair of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC)-West Region wins by dispatching Connecticut College, 20-9, and host Washington & Jefferson College, 17-10, at Henry Natatorium. Gannon, which improves its current winning streak to six games, was led by Jack Donnelly (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) who posted seven goals and two assists in the pair of contests.
Opening up the league season against the Camels of Connecticut College, Gannon did not hold back in the first quarter as five Golden Knights combined for six goals. Donnelly scored two in the frame before Donnelly and Thomas Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) combined for another five goals in the second quarter to help Gannon acquire a 14-3 lead by halftime.
Connecticut outscored Gannon, 2-1, in the third quarter. However, the Golden Knights pumped in five additional markers over the final eight minutes of the contest to earn a 11-goal win.
Taking on the host Presidents of Washington & Jefferson, Gannon once again dominated a game to acquire a seven-score margin of victory.
The first quarter was neck-and-neck for both teams as each put away four strikes. Gannon pulled ahead in the second quarter by outscoring their opponent 6-1.
The Golden Knights separated themselves further from W&J with four more goals in the third quarter to hold a 14-7 margin heading into the final eight minutes of regulation on the way to a 17-10 win.
Donnelly finished the day with seven goals and two assists, while Thomas Squeglia added five goals.
Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) tacked on four goals and five assists. All five of Marjanovic’s assists came versus W&J for a new career-high. His previous career-high was three assist set last season.
Further, Robert Bolmanski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored five goals and added two assists against the Presidents.
In cage, Jacob Hollo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) finished with 15 saves against Connecticut before accounting for 12 stops in turning back Washington & Jefferson.
