FUKUOKA, Japan — Former Indiana University goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault ’19 stopped nine-of-20 shots she faced to earn Player of the Game honors, but Hungary outlasted Canada by an 11-10 score in both teams’ opening game of Group D action at the 20th World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
She turned aside eight-of-11 action shots in the contest as Canada fell behind 5-3 in the first quarter prior to trailing 7-5 entering halftime. Canada chipped away at its deficit in the second half by outscoring Hungary 2-1 in the third quarter prior to the teams exchanging trios of tallies in the fourth quarter for the 11-10 final score.
Fellow former Hoosier Shae (Fournier) La Roche ’14 aided the Canadian offense by converting on one-of-four shots by burying a man-up opportunity to accompany a steal and a field block.
Canada will continue the World Aquatics Championships on Tuesday, July 18, at 3:00 a.m. Eastern, versus New Zealand.
