ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The George Washington University men’s water polo landed a win to close out its truncated regular season by outlasting La Salle University, 9-8, at the United States Naval Academy’s Scott Natatorium.

Andras Levai’s go-ahead goal with 2:25 remaining proved to be the game-winner with the Colonials holding strong defensively, including a stand in the closing seconds, to take its final tune-up before the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Championship, which will be held next Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7, across the Naval Academy campus at Lejeune Hall.

Levai paced the GW offense with three scores and an assist, while Gabriele Simonti and Viktor Jovanovic scored two goals apiece. Nick Schroeder provided a spark with a goal and two helpers.

GW led by a goal at the halftime intermission and pushed its lead to 8-6 on a goal by Ford Bruggen with 1:46 left in the third period, but La Salle scored the next two to even the score before Levai’s game-winning tally.

The Buff and Blue were able to dig in, led by goalkeeper Luca Castorina, who continued the strong start to his collegiate career with 14 saves. The Explorers took a timeout with 12 seconds left before the game’s final possession, but their attempt to tie with the clock winding down sailed wide.

GW was scheduled to face host Navy later in the day, but that contest was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols out of an abundance of caution.
