GROVE CITY, Pa. — The Grove City College women’s water polo team closed its Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III conference and home schedule by dropping games to Division III No. 6-ranked Augustana College, 23-8, and Carthage College, 16-15, at James E. Longnecker Pool.
The losses drop Grove City’s record to 3-11 overall, 2-6 in CWPA Division III action, as the Wolverines clinch the No. 7 seed for the CWPA Division III Championship hosted by Augustana in Rock Island, Ill., on Friday-Sunday, April 11-13.
In the late game, six Grove City players scored against Carthage, led by a five-goal outing from freshman Frances Baksa (Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary). Sophomore Shastyn Tihansky (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) scored four goals, while seniors Kamryn Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and Riley McCullough (Spring, Texas/Oak Ridge) both fired in a pair of goals.
Senior Sam Logue (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) and freshman Zoe Luttrell (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) also scored.
Kerr led Grove City with four assists, while Tihansky assisted two goals. McCullough, senior Mikayla Zablocki (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) and freshman Emma Strahorn (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) each added an assist, as did junior goalie Lea Steen (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg).
Baksa and Kerr both recorded four steals. Steen had three steals. Baksa and Tihansky both blocked two shots while Steen stopped eight shots.
In the Wolverines’ opening contest of the day, Augustana pulled away from Grove City in the second half thanks to an 8-3 scoring margin over the final 16 minutes.
Baksa chalked up four goals. Tihansky scored twice while Kerr and Luttrell also registered goals. McCullough finished with three assists and Strahorn assisted two goals. Kerr and Zablocki also had assists.
Baksa led the defensive with five steals. Steen stopped two shots.
Prior to the nightcap, Grove City honored its four-woman senior class of Kerr, Logue, McCullough and Zablocki.
