GROVE CITY, Pa. — The Grove City College women’s water polo team concluded the program’s opening weekend of the 2022 season by hosting a pair of scholarship-level programs in non-conference action at James E. Longnecker Pool. Grove City opened the day with a 25-13 setback against Division I Virginia Military Institute (VMI) before falling to Division II member Gannon University in the nightcap, 17-6.

Three Grove City players produced multiple goals against VMIT.  Junior Reese Trauger (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) paced the Wolverines with five goals, while senior Elaine Miller (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) fired in four goals. Junior Michelle Danley (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) added three goals. Senior Sophia Melanson (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) added a goal.

Freshman Kamryn Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) assisted four goals and Trauger had three assists. Miller recorded two assists. Danley, Melanson and senior Kyra Johnson (Hamilton, Va./Woodgrove) also tallied assists in the opener.

Danley and Trauger each led the defense with three steals. Junior Tia Kannel (York, Pa./Central York) stopped seven shots in goal for Grove City.

Miller led Grove City’s offensive attack with three goals against Gannon. Danley, Kerr and junior Emory Shepson (Grove City, Pa./Homeschooled) all added goals for Grove City. Trauger assisted two scores while Danley and Miller each added assists.

Trauger posted three steals against Gannon. Kannel made seven saves.
