GROVE CITY, Pa. — The host Grove City College women’s water polo team opened the 2023 season by hosting the Grove City Invitational at the James E. Longnecker Pool on Friday-Saturday, February 24-25.

The Wolverines fell to Division I member Mount St. Mary’s University, 23-4, on Friday night prior to taking losses to Division III Wittenberg University, 16-7, in non-conference action and Division II program Salem University, 17-3.

Senior Reese Trauger (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) paced Grove City in Friday night’s opener by scoring three times. Classmate Emory Shepson (Grove City, Pa./Homeschooled) added a goal for the Wolverines.

Senior Tia Kannel (York, Pa./Central York) made five saves in goal, while freshman Lea Steen (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) stopped four shots. Steen also had two steals.

Trauger fired in five goals Saturday morning against Wittenberg. Kannel and junior Clarie Lochstet (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) also scored. Shepson posted two assists, while Kannel and sophomore Sam Logue (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) each assisted goals.

Trauger led Grove City’s defense with three steals. Steen stopped five shots while Kannel tallied three saves.

Kannel pumped in a pair of goals Saturday afternoon against Salem while freshman Kiley Sill (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) added her first collegiate goal. Kannel, Lochstet and Sill all recorded assists.

Kannel also saw time in goal and made four saves. Steen had three saves.
