NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Grove City College women’s water polo team went 1-1 in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III conference play at Connecticut College’s Jane Cadwell Lott Natatorium. Grove City closed the day with a 15-10 win over Utica College on the heels of an 11-5 loss to Division III No. 10-ranked Macalester College.
Grove City charged out to an 11-0 lead against Utica before sewing up the win with four goals in the final period. Eight Grove City players scored in the victory, led by a five-goal effort from sophomore Abby Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Junior Brynna Bartlett (Olive Branch, Miss./St. George’s) scored three times, while senior Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) added two goals.
Freshman Elizabeth Andrews (Newberg, Ore./Veritas), junior Maggie Blume (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection), junior Carolyn Ebel (East McKeesport, Pa./Oakland Catholic), senior Grace Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) and sophomore Heidi Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) all scored one goal each.
Jank assisted four goals while Bartlett and sophomore Sonni Kiefer (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) both tallied three assists. Blume also assisted a goal.
Jank led the defense with three steals while Schmidt recorded two blocks in the field. Sophomore goaltender Rachel Blasdell (Leesburg, Va./Homeschooled) made seven saves to earn the win.
Andrews scored three goals in Saturday’s opener against Macalester. Blume and Jank also scored. Andrews, Blume, Kiefer and Klimek all assisted one goal each. Kiefer led Grove City with seven steals. In goal, senior Mary Frank (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne’s County) recorded seven saves.
