OTTAWA, Ont. — The Grove City College women’s water polo team opened its 25th season of intercollegiate play with a pair of games in Ontario during the college’s Spring Break. The Wolverines began their five-game trip on Sunday, February 25, with a 12-10 double-overtime setback at Queen’s College. On Monday, February 26, Ottawa University doubled up the Wolverines, 14-7, as the Gee-Gees jumped out to a 6-2 lead after one quarter.
Four Wolverines scored against Ottawa, led by a three-goal performance from freshman Shastyn Tihansky (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton). Sophomore Kiley Sill (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) scored twice, while juniors Kamryn Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and Mikayla Zablocki (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) also fired in goals.
Kerr, Sill, Tihansky and senior Katie Goodwill (Mogadore, Ohio/Kent Roosevelt) all tallied assists, as did sophomore goalie Lea Steen (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg).
Kerr led the defense with four steals while Tihansky had three thefts. Steen stopped three shots.
Queen’s outscored Grove City, 3-1, in the two extra periods during the season opener. Grove City trailed 4-2 at halftime before tying the game 7-7 by the end of the third quarter.
Tihansky led the Wolverines with five goals in her collegiate debut. Sill scored three times while Zablocki and senior Clarie Lochstet (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) both scored goals. Sill and junior Riley McCullough (Spring, Texas/Oak Ridge) each recorded three assists. Zablocki and sophomore Candace Scalise (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) also chalked up assists.
Tihansky recorded four steals against Queen’s while McCullough and Sill each had three takeaways. Steen stopped nine shots.
