WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Grove City College women’s water polo team dropped a pair of matches during the W&J Invitational hosted by Washington & Jefferson College at the Henry Center Natatorium. The host Presidents slipped past Grove City in a sudden death overtime non-conference game, 18-17, before the Wolverines were outgunned by Division II Gannon University, 26-14.
Six Grove City players scored against Washington & Jefferson, led by a six-goal outing from sophomore Frances Baksa (Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary). Junior Shastyn Tihansky (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) pumped in four goals, while senior Kiley Sill (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) scored three times.
Freshman Emily Addison (Eads, Tenn./Faith Heritage Christian) scored twice to go along with solo strikes by senior Candace Scalise (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) and freshman Amelia Hervey (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley).
Addison and sophomore Emma Strahorn (Harleysville, Pa./North Penn) both recorded three assists with Baksa and Sill each assisting on two goals. Hervey also had an assist, as did senior goalie Lea Steen (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg).
Steen tallied six steals, Addison posted three takeaways and Steen stopped 10 shots.
Both teams scored twice in the first two overtime periods. W&J then scored in the sudden-death third overtime session.
Sill and Tihansky both scored three times against Gannon. Addison and Scalise scored twice, while Baksa and Hervey contributed single tallies. Baksa and Strahorn chalked up three assists with Scalise and Sill handing out single helpers.
Steen made three saves in goal for Grove City.
