MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Grove City College women’s water polo team moved to 3-3 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III standings by splitting two conference matches at Monmouth College. The Wolverines capped the day with an 18-9 win over Utica College after dropping their first match to Carthage College, 12-7.

Five Grove City players posted multiple-goal performances against Utica. Freshman Tessa Leatherwood (Hurst, Texas/Colleyville Covenant) fired in seven goals for the Wolverines, while junior Abby Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored four times. Senior Brynna Bartlett (Olive Branch, Miss./St. George’s) posted three goals with sophomore Elizabeth Andrews (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) and junior Sonni Kiefer (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) both scoring twice.

Eight players recorded assists against Utica. Kiefer and sophomore Heidi Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian) each had three assists while Andrews, Bartlett, senior Carolyn Ebel (East McKeesport, Pa./Oakland Catholic), Leatherwood and Spicher all had two assists each. Sophomore Haley Jennings (Somers, Conn./East Catholic) also recorded an assist.

Bartlett, Kiefer and Leatherwood all had two steals, as did junior goalie Rachel Blasdell (Leesburg, Va./Homeschooled). Blasdell stopped two shots to earn the win.

Spicher scored three times in Grove City’s opener against Carthage. Leatherwood scored a pair of goals, while Bartlett and Ebel also contributed goals. Kiefer notched four assists with Bartlett and Schmidt also tacking on assists. 

Kiefer led the Wolverines on defense with seven steals. Andrews collected five thefts while Leatherwood had four steals. Bartlett recorded three steals. Blasdell stopped six shots in goal.
