BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Ryan Briggs of Grove City College is the 2020-21 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women’s Division I Sports Information Director of the Year.

Selected by the CWPA Director of Communications, the SID of the Year award is presented to individuals who “have achieved notable excellence in the field of water polo communications during the past academic year.”

The award marks the third CWPA Division III SID of the Year nod for Briggs who previously garnered back-to-back accolades during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.

Concluding his 19th year as Grove City’s sports information director, Briggs is responsible for the publicity and promotion of all 19 varsity sports teams at the institution.

A 2001 graduate of Grove City with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/Communications, he assisted in both the Grove City and Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) sports information offices during his undergraduate days.

Prior to returning to the College in June 2002, Briggs worked for over two years as sports editor at Allied News, a weekly newspaper based in Grove City.  In that span, he was also a sports writer and page designer for Mercer County’s largest daily newspaper, The (Sharon) Herald

Briggs has also contributed stories to The Indiana Gazette, The Punxsutawney Spirit and The Charleston (W.Va.) Gazette, as well.

The Secretary of the Grove City Athletic Hall of Fame Committee and a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference’s Dow Carnahan Media Award committee, he has also worked in a variety of capacities for several radio stations in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. 

The award marks the 11th Women’s Division III SID of the Year award presented by the league office.  Former Washington & Jefferson College Sports Information Director and current Director of Athletics Scott McGuinness claimed accolades during the 2010-11 and 2013-14 academic years, Briggs took back-to-back honors in 2011-12 and 2012-13 prior to former W&J SID Sean King three-peating with laurels in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17.  Macalester College’s Matt McLagan became the first SID from outside Pennsylvania by taking the 2017-18 award prior to Austin College’s Jeff Kelly earning notice in 2018-19 and Wittenberg University’s A.J. Meyer notching the 2019-20 award.
