TEMPE, Ariz. — The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan water polo team fell to host/No. 11 Arizona State University, 16-7, on the final day of the Malmsten Invitational at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
Lulu Hirschfield and Bailee Swindells led the Wolverines with two goals apiece as the team fell to 0-5 on the season, with Swindells scoring her first career goal for the Maize & Blue.
After going scoreless in the opening quarter, Hirschfeld converted on a bouncing shot past the Arizona State goalkeeper. Emma Gustafsson followed by converting a penalty shot, banking it off the post and into the net. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Sun Devils capitalized on 10 scoring opportunities and carried an eight-goal lead at 10-2 into halftime.
Swindells accounted for Michigan’s lone goal of the third quarter, scoring in the final 30 seconds to trim the Wolverines’ deficit to 13-3 heading into the fourth quarter. The Wolverines struck first in the final frame on a shot from Brooke Ingram before Hirschfeld added her second goal of the contest.
Michigan continued to chip away as Swindells and Maddy Scarth scored on back-to-back possessions, but Arizona State maintained control down the stretch to secure the 16-7 victory.
