FUKUOKA, Japan — Former Indiana University Hoosier Jessica Gaudreault ’19 stopped four-of-six shots she faced in the first half and grabbed a steal as Canada stopped South Africa, 21-6, in the Round of 16 at the 20th World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
Courtesy the victory, Canada advances into the quarterfinals as the squad will take on the Netherlands at 3:30 a.m. Eastern on Monday, July 23.
For Canada, fellow Hoosier Shae (Fournier) La Roche ’14 shot zero-for-four in 15 minutes of competition.
Overall, Canada outscored South Africa 6-1, 4-1, 5-1 and 6-3 in the first, second, third and fourth quarters, respectively, in picking up the win and a ticket to the quarterfinals.
For South Africa, former Lindenwood University athlete Hanna Muller was held without a shot in 8:27, while Bucknell University’s Boati Motau (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa/Roedean School South Africa) corralled a steal and did not convert a pair of scoring attempts.
South Africa will return to the water at 12:30 a.m. on Monday, July 24, against France in a Ninth-12th Place game. A victory in the meeting advances South Africa into the Ninth Place game on Tuesday, July 25, at 9:30 p.m. Eastern against the victor of a Ninth-12th Place game pitting Israel versus New Zealand. A loss drops South Africa into the 11th Place game at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on July 25 against the fallen from the Israel-New Zealand contest.
