BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Former Indiana University Hoosiers Jessica Gaudreault and Shae (Fournier) La Roche could not power their homeland to a victory over the Netherlands as Canada took a 10-7 setback at the Alfred Hajos National Swimming Stadium during the 2022/19th Annual FINA World Championships hosted in Budapest, Hungary.
Canada – which stands at 1-2-1 following a 7-7 tie versus Italy on Monday, June 20, a 22-2 defeat of Colombia on Wednesday, June 22, and an 11-7 loss to Hungary on Friday, June 24, will next be in action on Tuesday, June 28, against Kazakhstan in a 9th-12th place game. New Zealand will meet Argentina and Princeton University alumna Ashley Hatcher on June 28 in the other 9th-12th place game with the victors clashing on Thursday, June 29, for Ninth Place and the losers battling for 11th Place.
A 2019 graduate of Indiana and a current assistant coach at the University of Michigan, Gaudreault came off the bench versus the Netherlands to turn away four-of-five shots with a two-for-two performance on action shots and a two-for-three mark on man-up opportunities over the final 9:50 of the contest.
Entering the game with 1:50 left in the third quarter and trailing 9-4, Gaudreault kept Canada in the game as the team pulled to within 9-7 with 3:35 left in the fourth quarter. However, Canada failed to pull closer prior to Sabrina van der Sloot stuffing in an insurance strike for the Netherlands with six seconds left in the game.
Through four appearances at the championship, Gaudreault now has 23 saves on 44 shots.
La Roche – who scored once in the victory over Italy – added to her tournament statistics by swishing one-of-four shots with a steal, four rebounds and a field block. Through four games, she has two goals, five steals, six rebounds and a field block.
