FUKUOKA, Japan — Former Indiana University standout Shae (Fournier) La Roche ’14 converted on three-of-four shots and fellow Hoosier Jessica Gaudreault ’19 collected saves on 10-of-21 shots faced as Canada outlasted Hartwick College alumna Katie McKenty ’18 and New Zealand by a 13-11 final tally in Group D action at the 20th World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
La Roche – who shot one-for-four with a steal and a field block in an 11-10 loss to Hungary to open the championship – swished one-of-two action shots, one-of-one attempts from the center position and one-of-one counter attack chances to accompany a pair of steals and a field block against New Zealand.
Gaudreault – who turned aside nine-of-20 shots facing Hungary – broke into double digits versus New Zealand by stopping seven-of-11 action shots, two-of-seven man-up chances and one-of-two bids from the center while giving up a strike on a penalty shot.
McKenty – who snagged three steals as New Zealand clipped Japan, 17-16, earlier in the event – saw limited action against Canada as she corralled a steal and took three ejections at center forward during 7:57 of playing time.
Canada – which now stands at 1-1 in Group D – will next be in action at 6:00 a.m. Eastern on Thursday, July 20, while New Zealand – which is also 1-1 in Group D – tangles with Hungary at 11:00 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, July 19.
