BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Former Indiana University Hoosiers Jessica Gaudreault and Shae (Fournier) La Roche assisted Canada in topping Kazakhstan, 19-11, at the Szeged Tiszavirag Pool to reach the Ninth place game of the 2022/19th Annual FINA World Championships hosted in Budapest, Hungary.
Canada – which now stands at 2-2-1 following a 7-7 tie versus Italy on Monday, June 20, a 22-2 defeat of Colombia on Wednesday, June 22, an 11-7 loss to Hungary on Friday, June 24, and a 10-7 setback versus the Netherlands on Sunday, June 26 – will tangle with New Zealand on Thursday, June 20, for Ninth Place. New Zealand earned its way into the contest by upending Argentina and former Princeton University standout Ashley Hatcher by a 13-7 count.
A 2019 graduate of Indiana and a current assistant coach at the University of Michigan, Gaudreault stopped 10-of-21 shots – including six-of-11 action shots, two-of-three attempts from center and two-of seven man-up tries – and grabbed a pair of steals as Canada exploited 3-2, 6-3, 5-3 and 5-3 scoring advantages in the first-to-fourth quarters, respectively, to kowtow Kazakhstan.
Through five appearances at the championship, Gaudreault now has 33 saves on 65 shots.
La Roche – who scored once in the victory over Italy and again in the defeat by the Netherlands – drilled in one-of-three scoring tries and posted a trio of field blocks in 20:55 of action.
Through five games, she has three goals, five steals, six rebounds and four field blocks.
