2021 Iona College Men’s Water Polo Schedule
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Iona College released the institution’s 2021 men’s water polo schedule.
The Gaels season opener will be two games on Saturday, September 4 at the Navy Open hosted by the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., against George Washington University and Bucknell University. Iona will wrap up the weekend on Sunday, September 5, versus the host team Midshipmen and Mount St. Mary’s University.
The Maroon & Gold return to the road the following weekend for games at the Princeton Invitational at Princeton University in Princeton, N.J. Iona will play three games on the weekend – two on Friday, September 10, against Johns Hopkins University and Wagner College prior to a rematch versus Navy on Sunday, September 11. Five days later the Gaels host their first home game of the year against Penn State Behrend in their only non-conference contest at the Hynes Center Pool.
Iona opens up Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) play with four straight home games as the team hosts back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday-Sunday, October 2-3. On October 2, the Gaels face Connecticut College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). A day later, Harvard University and Brown University come to New Rochelle for games.
Following a road game at St. Francis College Brooklyn on Wednesday, October 6, action returns to the Hynes Center Pool as Princeton travels North for a game on Saturday, October 9. The last home game in the 2021 season for Iona will be on Wednesday, October 20, as the Terriers of St. Francis Brooklyn trek across New York.
Iona will then make a quick trip to the West Coast for fours games in two days as the Gales battled Biola University and Fresno State University on Saturday, October 23, prior to meeting Santa Clara University and the United States Air Force Academy on Sunday, October 24.
The final five games for the Maroon & Gold will be on the road. First, the team will battle Connecticut College on Saturday, October 30, in New London, Conn. before moving up the coast to meet Brown in Providence, Rhode Island, later in the day. On Sunday, October 31, the Gaels will complete another road doubleheader in Cambridge, Massachusetts by trick-or-treating for victories at MIT and Harvard.
The regular season comes to a close on Saturday, November 6, at Princeton as the Gales will aim to gain some momentum heading into the NWPC Championship back in the Garden State at DeNunzio Pool on Friday-Sunday, November 19-21.
The victor of the NWPC Championship claims the league’s automatic berth to the 2021 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship field.
