PRINCETON, N.J. — The Bucknell University women’s water polo team’s comeback fell short in a 9-8 defeat by Iona University.
Tied at two-all after the first quarter, the Gaels pulled ahead 4-3 by halftime thanks to a last second goal.
The margin expanded to 7-4 in the third quarter to provide a cushion Iona needed to survive a fourth-stanza rally by the Bison.
Bucknell attempted to climb back into the game by outscoring the Gaels 4-2 over the final eight minutes, but Iona managed to hang on for the victory.
The difference in the game was exclusion opportunities as Iona converted on four of its seven chances, while the Bison went one for five in such situations.
