NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — On Saturday, September 30, Iona University Athletics will hold a 40 Years of Iona Water Polo event on Iona’s New Rochelle campus. The event takes place at 3:00 p.m., in the LaPenta School of Business Atrium in between the Gaels’ scheduled Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) matchups with Connecticut College and Brown University.
The event celebrates the 40th anniversary of the sport, along with alumni and friends who have continued to support the program. As part of the celebration, Iona Athletics Arrigoni Hall of Famer Greg Judge ’84 announced that he will generously match up to $40,000 of gifts and pledges made in support of a new endowment fund set up for Iona University water polo.
“Iona water polo will always hold a special place in my heart – the lifelong friendships I made help keep the amazing memories alive,” said Judge. “We truly are like a big family and gratefully, every year we add new members and continue to grow. Many of you know my support for the program has been loyal and strong. I feel very fortunate to have the ability to give back as Iona provided the education that prepared me for success in my career.”
“Now I’d like to challenge all men’s water polo alumni and supporters to join me in ensuring the team can continue far into the future. I will match dollar-for-dollar, all gifts/pledges up to $40,000 made in support of the new Men’s Water Polo Endowment Fund,” Judge added. “The outcome will be Iona’s first endowed fund in support of an athletic team. I am a very proud Iona Gael and I hope that this challenge inspires others to join me in establishing a permanent fund for Iona men’s water polo. Together we can FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT!”
“There are few supporters of any program at Iona as loyal and committed as Greg Judge is to water polo,” said Director of Athletics Matthew Glovaski. “As we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Men’s Water Polo, I am still amazed with Greg’s unwavering passion and support for the program. We thank him for this generous leadership commitment and look forward to what this initiative will make possible for our current and future water polo student-athletes.”
“Greg is Iona water polo and embodies all the qualities we preach to our student-athletes,” said men’s and women’s water polo head coach Brian Kelly ’94. “His generous gift not only makes an immediate impact but helps to sustain Iona men’s water polo for the next generation.”
