BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Johns Hopkins University’s Jayden Kunwar (Jr., Woodside, Calif./Menlo) was named to the 2021 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Division III Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large Team.
The 2021 Academic All-America® Men’s and Women’s At-Large Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom. The program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA.
The At-Large Program includes athletes from the following sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
An All-District 2 (comprised of all Division III teams in Connecticut, Washington D.C., Delaware, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia) First Team selection, Kunwar claims the 44th award CoSIDA Academic All-America® accolade presented to a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) affiliated athlete (men and women).
All current dues-paying group and individual members of CoSIDA have the opportunity to vote on the Academic All-America® teams within their division (NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA). Members of the Academic All-America® Core Committee, the CoSIDA Board of Directors and CoSIDA staff members vote for teams in every division.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games to be eligible. In addition, no student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
Historically, the Blue Jays’ water polo program has produced eight CoSIDA Academic All-District® and six Academic All-America® selections. Kunwar follows Kevin Yee (Third Team, 2016), Thomas de Lyon (First Team, 2010), Jeremy Selbst (First Team, 2011; Third Team, 2010) and Zaman Mirzahah (First Team, 2001) in garnering Academic All-America status.
Kunwar boasts a 3.92 cumulative grade point average (GPA) as a computer science major. He earned Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Second Team All-America honors in 2019 after pouring in 99 goals and 126 points. He also drew 48 ejections and won 34 sprints in leading Hopkins to the USA Water Polo Division III Championship semifinals. Kunwar ranked third in the nation in goals and seventh in points in 2019 – Hopkins did not compete during the 2020/Winter 2021 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. His 99 goals are the third-most in school single-season history while his 126 points are the fourth most. He already ranks in the top-25 in program history in career points (163), goals (133) and ejections drawn (67).
Kunwar is currently working as a summer analyst at General Atlantic after serving as a summer investment analyst at SoftBank Investment Advisors last summer. He is also a managing partner of A-Level Capital, leading a team of more than 20 undergraduate at a student-run Venture Capital (VC) firm. In the summer of 2019, Kunwar worked as a research and development engineer at Benvenue Medical.
Overall, Kunwar is the lone water polo athlete to claim CoSIDA Division III Academic All-America® recognition on either the men’s or women’s list.
