ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan water polo head coach Dr. Marcelo Leonardi announced that Kata Utassy, a left-handed utility player from Budapest, Hungary, has signed a tender of financial aid and will join the program this Fall.

“Kata brings a wealth of international experience with her club national team,” said Leonardi. “She is an exceptional passer and shooter with the ability to read scenarios, attack zones and create her own shots. She will add a different dimension in our motion offense serving as a post-up option. She is very humble, unique, and her work ethic is extremely high. Her family values and character fit into our water polo culture at Michigan. She will make an immediate impact to our strong core of returners next year.”

• Member of the 2019 Hungary Junior World Championship team that placed seventh
• Among the players on the 2018 Hungary Youth World Championship roster that placed sixth
• Game MVP against Brazil at the 2019 Junior World Championships and against Russia at the 2018 Youth World Championships
• Fourth place at the U20 Junior European Championships in 2018
• Two-time captain of the BVSC-Zugló club team
• Won the 2016-17 Youth National Championship
• Four-time Player of the Year
• Attends the Könyves Kálmán Secondary School in Budapest
• Plans to major in psychology
• Full name is Janka Kata Utassy

Utassy becomes the fifth member of the 2019-20 signing class that includes Libby Alsemgeest (Hamilton, New Zealand), Lola Ciruli (Lafayette, California), Sammi Monroe (Pleasant Hill, California) and Elise Walker (Los Altos, California), all who signed in November.
