LORETTO, Pa. — Saint Francis University officially introduced the Red Wolves as the new mascot and athletic identity during a special campus-wide celebration, marking a significant milestone in the university’s history as it prepares to transition to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III athletics.

Director of Athletics Jim Brazill opened the ceremony by reflecting on the importance of the moment for the Saint Francis community.  He emphasized that athletics at Saint Francis has always represented more than competition, serving as a vehicle for to build character and leadership.

As the university prepares for its move to Division III competition in the fall, Brazill noted the school University will reinvest in its Catholic and Franciscan mission by placing the holistic student experience at the center of athletics.

“Today is not about leaving behind the proud tradition that generations built here,” Brazill said. “It’s about honoring that legacy while building momentum for the future.”

Following opening video presentation, University President Fr. Malachi Van Tassell, T.O.R. explained the deeper meaning behind the new Red Wolves identity.  It draws inspiration from one of the most enduring stories associated with Saint Francis of Assisi — his encounter with the Wolf of Gubbio.

According to Franciscan tradition, the town of Gubbio lived in fear of a wolf until Saint Francis approached the animal not with violence, but with compassion, courage and understanding. Through trust and reconciliation, a divided community was brought together.

“That story reflects the very values we hope define this university: courage, community, compassion, and belonging,” Van Tassell said. “This is not simply a new mascot. It is a symbol of who we are.”

He added that this move will not erase the legacy of the Red Flash and that student-athletes will continue honor the past as they carve out a path for their own future.

Note: The new athletic logo is being rolled out in phases as it is integrated into athletic facilities, team uniforms, and implemented throughout social media and web platforms.
