BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Ethan Zirh (Gr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill) of Long Island University made 26 saves in a trio of home Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) games at the LIU Pool to earn the conference’s October 2 Defensive Player of the Week award.

He stopped 12 shots on Saturday, September 30, in helping the Sharks chomp on Division III No. 5-ranked the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) prior to turning aside five scoring tries in a 15-11 loss to No. 17 Brown University later in the day.  During the Brown game, he recorded the 1,000th save of his intercollegiate career.

On Sunday, October 1, he capped off his team’s weekend homestand by collecting nine saves in a 16-6 loss to No. 19 Harvard University.

The Defensive Player of the Week award marks the fifth during his time as an intercollegiate athlete – but first at LIU and in the NWPC.  Previously, Zirh earned Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Defensive Player of the Week recognition in 2019 (November 4) and 2021 (September 20, October 4, October 11) as a member of the Wagner College men’s water polo team.
