SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Macalester College water polo team began conference play at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III-West Region tournament hosted by Wittenberg University. The Scots dropped a 17-4 contest to Division III No. 9-ranked Augustana College prior to topping the host , 10-7.
Against Augustana, the Vikings broke open the match in the second quarter, outscoring Macalester 7-1 to lead 10-3 en route to a 17-4 win. Juniors Eleanor Michaud (Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and Sydney Hollingsworth (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) scored in the first quarter, first year Brooke Lane (Meriden, Conn./Hopkins School) found the net in the second quarter, and Hollingsworth tallied her second goal of the match in the third quarter.
Sophomore goalkeeper Laurel O’Hare (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) made seven saves for the Scots.
The day’s second game, senior Riley Waters (Portland, Oregon/St. Mary’s Academy) scored the first goal of the match before Wittenberg scored twice to lead 2-1 after one quarter. Goals by Michaud and Hollingsworth sandwiched around a Tigers’ tally made the halftime score three-all.
In the third quarter, the Scots hit their stride, getting goals from Waters, first year Elizabeth Matlin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and a pair from first year Olivia Dimka (Denton, Texas/John H. Guyer) to lead, 7-4 heading into the final quarter.
Wittenberg scored three goals in the fourth, but Waters matched the hosts with three goals of her own to clinch the win, 10-7.
