Macalester College’s Matt McLagan Named 2017-18 Collegiate Water Polo Association Women’s Division III Sports Information Director of the Year

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Matt McLagan of Macalester College is the 2017-18 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women’s Division III Sports Information Director of the Year.

Selected by the CWPA Director of Communications, the SID of the Year award is presented to individuals who “have achieved notable excellence in the field of water polo communications during the past academic year.”

A St, Paul, Minn. native, McLagan joined the Scots’ staff in August of 2015 to take on the role of the Director of Sports Information for Macalester’s 21 varsity athletic teams. He previously served 11 years as the Director of Athletic Media Relations at Caldwell University, a small private college in New Jersey that competes at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II level. While at Caldwell, McLagan was the sole media contact for the department’s 15 athletic teams, provided all statistics, stories and photos for the athletics website, and created and maintained all social media platforms.

Additionally, McLagan largely impacted the university’s athletic brand. He helped develop and maintain proper usage of licensed marks and logos and worked closely with the college’s booster club in recruiting, fundraising and promotional efforts.

In 2013, McLagan was the NCAA Division II Women’s East Region winner of the Grant Burger Media Award, presented by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Prior to Caldwell, he spent five years at Virginia Commonwealth University as both a sports writer and an Assistant Director of Media Services and Sports Information.

The award marks the eighth Women’s Division III SID of the Year award presented by the league office and the first to an athletics publicist outside Pennsylvania.  Former Washington & Jefferson College Sports Information Director and current Director of Athletics Scott McGuinness claimed accolades during the 2010-11 and 2013-14 academic years, Grove City College SID Ryan Briggs took back-to-back honors in 2011-12 and 2012-13 prior to current W&J SID Sean King three-peating with laurels in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17.
