BRIDGEPORT Pa. — Division III No. 10-ranked the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) elected to forfeit its Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) road game to Iona University, 5-0, per National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules.

Trailing 12-5 with approximately 2:53 left in the fourth quarter, MIT head coach Alyssa Diacono informed the officials of her intent to forfeit the remainder of the game.

Per NCAA Rule 3.13.1, a game may be declared a forfeit:

  • If a team is not ready to start the game within 30 minutes of the announced starting time, unless there is mutual consent between the competing institutions to wait an additional period of time or to reschedule;
  • When a team fails to comply with the water polo rules after the pregame meeting; or
  • When a team decides for any reason not to start or complete the game

Per rule, the game is declared a 5-0 forfeit and all statistics are nullified.
