BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Clyde Huibregtse (Sr., New York, N.Y./Bronx) was named to the 2020 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Division III Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large Team. 

The 42nd Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) affiliated athlete to garner CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors, Huibregtse is the fourth MIT player to register honors following Craig Cheney (2014, First Team), Matt Lau (1997, Third Team) and John Friedman (1983, First Team).

A Second Team selection, Huibregtse is one of two Division III men’s water polo athletes to earn recognition this year joining Third Team pick and fellow senior Zack Rossman of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on a list comprised of competitors from the sports of lacrosse, rifle, skiing, fencing, swimming and diving, tennis, golf, volleyball, gymnastics, water polo, ice hockey and wrestling. 

To be nominated for Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games to be eligible. In addition, no student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

Huibregtse, who became the inaugural CoSIDA Academic All-District selection from the MIT water polo team since 2014, completed his time in Cambridge with a 3.92 GPA as a double major in mathematics with computer science and physics.

The senior has a litany of awards:

  • Two-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America selection (Second Team: 2017, 2018)
  • Four-time Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) All-Conference selection (Second Team: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019)
  • Four-time Division III Eastern Championship All-Tournament selection (First Team: 2017, 2018 2019; Second Team: 2016)
  • NWPC Championship All-Tournament pick (Second Team: 2017)
  • 2016 Division III Eastern Championship Rookie of the Tournament,
  • 2018 Division III Eastern Championship Most Valuable Player
  • Led MIT to the 2016 and 2018 Division III Eastern Championships, with runner-up finishes in 2017 and 2019.
  • 2019 USA Water Polo Division III National Championship All-Tournament Team for leading MIT to the inaugural USA Water Polo Division III National Championship where the Engineers finished third in the country.

He closed his collegiate career this with a total of 174 goals, 49 assists, 23 blocks and 70 steals and in his final game back on December 8, 2019 against rival Johns Hopkins University set a new career-high with seven goals in the 20-13 victory.

Out of the pool, Huibregtse has served as a simulation and computing engineer at Oklo, Inc., a physicist and developer with the MIT Compact Muon Solenoid Project and as a technology intern at the New York City Center for Space Science Education. He also currently works as a game designer for 3D Game Development and has since 2018.

Huibregtse is one of three MIT men’s athletes to make the Academic All-America® team joining Brouke Edskes and Sam Ubellacker of the swimming team who garnered First Team accolades.
