O’FALLON, Ill.  — The Carthage College women’s water polo team fell by a 16-4 score at McKendree University.

Trailing 5-0 in the first quarter, Yamila Areizaga got the Firebirds going with a goal at the 1:28 mark of the first quarter.

However, the Bearcats closed out the opening frame with an additional two goals to pull ahead 7-1 prior to adding four and two goals in the second and third quarters, respectively, to claim a 13-1 margin heading into the final eight minutes of regulation.

Brenna Carstens punched in Carthage’s second tally with 6:28 left in the game prior to Morrigan Bushroe-Stumpf (3:08) and Sydney Logan (2:46) tacking on tallies.

In goal for the Firebirds, Ella Selman had 11 saves with 11 goals allowed, while Faith Harris made five saves and permitted three markers.

“We got off to a slow start against a very experienced McKendree ball club,” head coach Ryan Castle commented. “Once we got into the rhythm of the game, we created a lot of good opportunities and got better and better as the game progressed. Ella Selman and Faith Harris played well in the cage, and Yamila Areizaga again gave us some spark and movement on offense.”
