RIVERSIDE, Calif., — The Mercyhurst University men’s water polo team defeated Division III No. 8-ranked the University of La Verne, 13-8, before suffering a 20-6 loss to host/No. 14 California Baptist University to open the 2018 Lancer Joust.

Daniel Alvarez led the way for Mercyhurst against La Verne as he tallied three goals and two assists.
 
Philip Jenny, Matt Bachler and Brennan Russell scored two goals each while Alec Diaz, Ryan Witoslawski, Otis Tyson and Jackson Rehmet added single goals. Witoslawski also recorded five steals.
 
Noah Ratliff and Andrew Howe contributed one assist each to the Lakers’ effort.
 
In net, Nash Greeven made five saves while recording one assist and two steals.
 
Domenic D’Andrea scored three goals, Myles Storms and Michael Staine added two goals and Wesley Hovenesian recorded one goal for La Verne.
 
Goaltender Ian Hernandez made five saves, four steals and added one assist.
 
In the final game of the day, Witoslawski had two goals for Mercyhurst, while Connor Schmitz, Jenny, Ratliff and Russel each tallied one goal.
 
Single assists were credited to Alvarez and Tyson.
 
Greeven had five saves and two steals in net for the Lakers.
 
PJ McDonough led the way for CBU with four goals. He was followed by Hunter Barnett, Logan Mena and Dominick Nevarez with three goals each. Nick Johnson scored two goals and single goals were earned by Kyle Rasmussen, Matthew Diacono, Christian Britton, Zach Lowery and Joseph Mireles.
 
In net, Gabe Thorne made five saves and had one steal. Tommy Lotero had nine saves and one steal.
