ERIE, Pa. — The Lakers of Mercyhurst University topped the host Lions of Penn State Behrend with a big offensive game from Daniel Alvarez, a stifling defense and a .500 team shooting percentage (18-of-36) in an 18-6 win.
Alvarez led the Lakers with six goals. Matt Bachler was second on the team with five points, including two goals and three assists. Philip Jenny scored three and Ryan Witoslawski added two.
The Lakers scored 11-straight goals to begin the game before Penn State Behrend finally got on the board late in the second quarter.
In the late game, Mercyhurst took down Mt. San Antonio by six in an unofficial National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) contest. The Lakers once again led after the first quarter 5-2 and ended up leading after each quarter.
Mercyhurst had a balanced scoring attack with nine different players scoring at least once. Bachler had four goals and two assists, followed by Witoslawski and Conor Schmitz who scored three each.
Despite ten exclusions against the Lakers, they were able to hold Mt. San Antonio to just one-for-10 on the power play. Conversely, the Lakers scored twice on its three power play tries.
