ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend women’s water polo team came up short to Mercyhurst University in the final regular season game by falling 15-7 at home.

The Lakers got things going early in the second meeting of the year against the Lions, scoring eight of the first nine goals.

After Mercyhurst tallied five goals in the first 3:56 of the game, Daniella Rio-Martinez (Guaynabo, Puerto/Sagrados Corazones) put Behrend on the board with 2:33 remaining in the period. The Lakers ended the first quarter on a 3-0 run to push the margin to 8-1.

Similar to the first quarter, the Lakers started early by registering a goal in the opening 37 seconds. Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) was able to notch a goal to end the Lakers scoring streak at four goals, making the score 9-2. Angela Laier (Lansing, Mich./Holt) notched a goal in the period, while Mercyhurst tallied two more to extend the lead to 11-3 at the break.

The second half was evenly played between both teams. Each team was also to record two goals in each period to end the game at 15-7.

Devon Van Rensburg (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford) paced the way for the Lions, scoring three goals while making five steals. Remy De Guzman (Mission Viejo/Trabuco Hills) also recorded three steals in the tough loss.

Holly Rae Hanson (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) posted six saves and two steals in the game. Jenessa Islas-Parker (Palatine, Ill./Frema) and Rio-Martinez each dished out two assists.
