BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announces the hiring of Mike Shannon to work in the league’s Membership Services.

Shannon will be responsible for membership orientation, development and satisfaction, including the coordination of hotel room blocks and event management for the league’s close to 300 members at division, regional and national championships around the country. 

The primary contact for the league’s men’s Division III Collegiate Club, women’s Division III varsity and men’s/women’s National Collegiate Club, CWPA, Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) and Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Championships, Shannon will coordinate the league’s Hall of Fame ceremony holding responsibilities for assisting in site selection, event planning and management.  In addition, he will serve as the league’s primary marketing specialist for ticket and merchandise sales, concessions management and clinic registrations.

An emphasis of the position will be the reservation and management of the CWPA’s hotel booking process for referees and teams at  regular season and championship events around the nation during both the men’s and women’s seasons.  In addition, he will be charged with using social media to educate and inform the league’s membership on pertinent dates during the course of the academic year.

He will also serve to coordinate the compilation and distribution of the All-Conference, All-America, Scholar Athlete of the Year and Scholar-Athlete Teams.

A native of Bridgeport, Pa., Shannon returns to his hometown following an internship with the Reading Fightin Phils of Minor League Baseball’s Eastern League.  He served as a seasonal Food & Beverage intern with the Fightin Phils from March until August overseeing the coordination of schedules, ordering and stocking of bulk orders from a dozen distributors.  Further, He assisted in inventory duties and assisted in “on-field” entertainment during the course of games.

Prior to joining the Reading Fightin Phils, Shannon served as a production assistant and remote announcer during the CWPA’s remote collegiate club broadcasts during the 2016 men’s and 2017 women’s season from September until March.

He aided CWPA Director of Multimedia Jon Weaver in the production and operation of the remote streaming coverage.  As part of his duties, he served as a technical director, remote announcer, replay/graphics specialist and camera operator in both the league office and on site at the CWPA’s championship events around the country. Overall, Shannon announced over 50 collegiate games both on-location and remotely.

In addition, he has three-years of prior experiences (August 2013-to-August 2016) as a sales associate with Mitchell and Ness Nostalgia Company, a purveyor of authentic throwback team apparel, replica jerseys and branded apparel since 1904, in Philadelphia.

The largest single sport conference and the second largest collegiate athletic association behind only the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Collegiate Water Polo Association close to 300 teams on the varsity and club levels for both men and women around the country.

A 2016 graduate of Temple University’s School of Media and Communications, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies and Production with concentration in Sports/Television production. 

During his time at Temple, he worked as a production assistant in 2012 with the Columbia Broadcast Service (CBS) radio news affiliate KYW producing and compiling 60-second news segments for live air.
