BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Matt McCann of Mount St. Mary’s University is the 2020-21 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women’s Division I Sports Information Director of the Year.

Selected by the CWPA Director of Communications, the SID of the Year award is presented to individuals who “have achieved notable excellence in the field of water polo communications during the past academic year.”

McCann’s award marks the seventh CWPA Division I SID of the Year laurel presented by the league office since the merger of the Southern, Northern and Western Divisions into one format prior to the 2015 season.

The 14th year of Athletics Communications recognition by the CWPA dating back to the first awards following the 2008 season, the award marks the first bestowed upon a first-year varsity program.

Appointed as Assistant Sports Information Director for Mount St. Mary’s in October 2019, McCann returned to his alma mater after graduating from the Mount with a degree in sport management in 2012.

Prior to his return to Emmitsburg, Md., McCann served a stint as the Director of Athletic Media and Public Relations for Mississippi Valley State University. In this capacity, he worked with all 15 of the Delta Devils’ athletic programs.

Prior to joining Valley, McCann served as Assistant Director of Media Relations for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletics Department. In this role he worked as the school’s primary contact for volleyball, cross country, track & field and baseball, while assisting in other areas of the department, which includes serving as a departmental historian.

McCann joined Maryland Eastern Shore after three seasons working in minor league baseball. He most recently worked for the Bowie Baysox (Eastern League) as a Group Events Manager in 2013, his second tour of duty with the club after working as a Marketing Intern for 2011. McCann also served as promotions assistant for the Frederick Keys (Carolina League) in 2012, assisting in the marketing department.

In addition to his service at Maryland Eastern Shore, he worked with the Delmarva Shorebirds on game nights and officiated high school volleyball matches and recreation league basketball.
