LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Mount St. Mary’s University men’s water polo team finished 1-1 on the final day of the 2022 Bucknell University as the Mountaineers took a 20-9 setback versus Salem University in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) competition before upending Mercyhurst University, 17-13, in a non-conference clash.

Facing Salem, Mount St. Mary’s was unable to keep pace with a Tigers’ squad which utilized seven goals in both the first and fourth quarters to overpower the Mountaineers.  Tommaso Baldineti scored five times to lead Mount St. Mary’s in the game.

Later in the day, the Mountaineers used goals from nine athletes to down Mercyhurst.

Alex Hoy posted his first goal of the year to open the scoring, helping the Mount build a 4-3 lead by the close of the first quarter. The advantage enlarged to 9-5 by halftime as Nate Hopkins tallied his first pair of goals in the second quarter.

Another five goals gave the Mount a 14-8 cushion, which was enough to withstand a comeback from the Lakers. Three scores in the opening moments of the fourth quarter cut the lead down to three, but the Lakers were unable to shrink their deficit the rest of the way.

Kiahi Horan registered three goals to post his second hat-trick of the year and lead the scoring for the Mountaineers.
