PRINCETON, NJ. — Mount St. Mary’s University split the final day of the Princeton Invitational with a 17-16 win versus Iona University prior to suffering an 18-5 setback against the host/No. 12-ranked Tigers.
With the split, the Mountaineers move to 3-4 for the season.
Facing Iona in the early contest, the Mountaineers found themselves down 12-11 at the halftime break, with four goals from Luka Urosevic, two markers from Jack Fox, Aaron Tarr and Aleksandar Radosavljevic in addition to a solo marker by Giannis Skliras accounting for the team’s offensive output.. For assists, Neven Cerkez recorded two, while solo helpers came from Nikos Agritelis, Radosavljevic, Fox and Tarr.
Ivan Morales logged one save in the first half of game one.
Tight play between the Mountaineers and the Gaels continued in the second half, with the two teams battling out a 6-4 half win, in favor of the Mount.
Urosevic continued his first half scoring by adding one more goal, off an assist from Tarr, to his game tally of five. Tarr and Skliras also logged one second half goal each with Tarr’s completing a hat-trick. Nathan Valentine added his name to the scoresheet towards the end of the third quarter before denting the twine again in the fourth quarter to give him two goals on the day. Neven Cerkez made the winning shot to push the Mount into a 17-16 win over Iona.
In cage, Linc Smith went in to relieve Morales, recording seven saves during the second half of the game. Tarr and Radosavljevic also had other assists recorded in the game as well as helpers from Will Matthews, Urosevic and Giacomo Graff each handing out single aids.
The Mountaineers went into the game against undefeated Princeton seeking to post an upset.
However, the Mount was held scoreless for the entire first quarter while battling Princeton’s tough defense. Radosavljevic and Urosevic finished shots in the second quarter but the Tigers built a 10-2 margin prior to halftime.
Going into the third quarter, Graff was able to add his name to the scoresheet for his inaugural collegiate goal to make the score 15-3.
In the fourth quarter, Nick Harper and Max Economy both swished shots to close out the Mountaineers’ scoring in an 18-5 loss.
Smith recorded three saves in game two with Valentine, Morales and Skliras dishing out assists.
