EMMITSBURG, Md. — With their inaugural seasons in the rear-view mirror, the Mount St. Mary’s University men’s and women’s water polo teams look towards the future. That begins with the signing of 18 players – nine women and nine men – that make up the second ever recruiting class.
“I look forward to welcoming this class to the Mount,” said head coach Alyssa Diacono. “Each student-athlete brings their own unique style and experience to the pool and classroom. I look forward to year two and continuing to build on what we started last year.”
Several newcomers arrive serving in a utility role, with others having more specific duties outlined. The women’s team adds two goalkeepers while the men’s team upgraded on offense with centers and attackers. Each team also shored up their back lines with a pair of two-meter defenders.
Some newcomers bring a more local flair to the team, with five athletes hailing from the state of Pennsylvania. Others trek to Emmitsburg from all over the United States, along with four international students – a Bahaman, a New Zealander and two Canadians.
Two members of the recruiting class are transfers from other Division I institutions. Kiahi Horan joins the men’s team from La Salle University, and Serena Thurman goes in as a graduate transfer from Wagner College.
The group joins a returning core of eight women and six men.
Mount St. Mary’s men’s team returns to the pool this weekend with the women coming back in the winter months. A full list of games for the men can be found by CLICKING HERE while the women’s schedule will be announced at a later date.
