LEWISBURG, Pa. — Mount St. Mary’s University men’s water polo split a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) doubleheader with a 13-9 win over Mercyhurst University and a 13-9 loss to host Bucknell University at Kinney Natatorium. With the split, the Mountaineers move to a 7-17 overall record with a 1-5 MAWPC mark.
Against the Lakers of Mercyhurst, the Mountaineers got things running, winning the first quarter by a score of 3-2. A 5-1 quarter win played out during the second frame to guarantee an 8-3 lead heading into halftime for the Mount. The Mountaineers won the third quarter by a score of 3-1 and although the Lakers put up five goals in the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers held on for a four-score win.
Aaron Tarr put five past the Mercyhurst defense while adding in an assist and a steal. Nate Valentine recorded a hat trick against the Lakers while also posting a hat trick of assists. William Matthews scored two goals, recorded two assists and completing three steals, while the trio of Max Economy, Jack Fox and Carson Owens all recorded solo strikes.
Sherif Hosni snagged 14 saves in goal for the Mountaineers against the Lakers.
Facing Bucknell, Mount St. Mary’s fell behind by the first intermission in losing the opening quarter, 3-1. The Mount made things interesting before halftime, scoring four goals but allowing seven to trail 10-5 at the game’s midway point. The Mountaineers held Bucknell to a 2-1 third quarter and won the fourth quarter by a score of 3-1 to trim the final margin to 13-9.
Tarr notched six goals, while Fox, Alexandros Belesis and Ioannis Skliras each recorded a goal. Matthews racked up three steals.
Hosni recorded 17 saves in goal against the Bison.
