STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Former Whittier College goalie Murat Ersoz joins the staff of head coach Ciaran Wolohan as an assistant coach at Wagner College.
A 2020 graduate of Whittier with a bachelors degree in Business Administration and Management with double concentration in Marketing and Finiance, Murat is a native of Istanbul, Turkey, and a graduate of Istek Kemal Ataturk Dkullan, he recorded a standout career for the Poets.
The Most Valuable Player of the inaugural USA Water Polo Division III Collegiate Water Polo Championship for recording 15 saves in a 5-3 defeat of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on December 8, 2019, at home in the Slade Aquatic Center in Whittier, Ersoz previously stopped 14 shots in a 12-8 defeat of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the semifinals to conclude the event with 29 saves in the span of two complete games.
He compiled 859 saves during his intercollegiate career at Whittier and earned four All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) All-Conference nods with Second (2016) and First (2017, 2018, 2019) honors.
A three-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Division III All-America selection with Honorable Mention (2017, 2018) and First Team (2019) status, he began his collegiate career by compiling 241 saves, 19 steals and 23 assists as a freshman in 2016. Following a sophomore season in which he racked up 202 saves with a 9.19 goals against average, Ersoz posted 213 saves with a 9.39 goals against average as a junior in 2018.
He concluded his time in Whittier with 203 saves, 18 steals, two assists and a 9.59 goals against average as a senior in 2019.
Ersoz joins a Wagner program which did not compete in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. In 2019, the Seahawks posted an 8-23 record with a Fifth Place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Championship.
Founded in 2016, Wagner has a 50-74 mark all-time with Second (2017), Third (2018) and Fifth Place (2016, 2019) marks at the MAWPC Championship.
