VILLANOVA, Pa. — Simon Derby (So., Greenwich, Conn.) scored five times to claim Player of the Game recognition as Division III No. 5-ranked New York University of the New York Division used a 6-0 outburst in the second quarter to overwhelm Division III No. 10 Macalester College of the Heartland Division, 15-3, on the first day of the 2019 Men’s Division III Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) at Villanova University.
- NYU fell behind early in the game as Pablo Monterroso (So., Cuernavaca, Mexico) converted on a man-up chance with 2:28 left in the first quarter. However, New York closed out the frame with back-to-back tallies as Ben Conley (Sr., Orinda, Calif.) swished a five-meter penalty shot (1:45) and Aaron Lawrence (Gr., Dallas, Texas) connected for a natural marker (1:08) to put the Bobcats in front to stay at 2-1.
- NYU ballooned its margin up to 8-1 by halftime as the squad outscored the Sons of Neptune 6-0 in the second quarter.
- Four more goals in the third quarter made it 12-1 before Gabe Berman (Jr., Berkeley, Calif.) snapped NYU’s 12-goal outburst by stroking in a shot with 6:18 left in the fourth quarter to move Macalester within 12-2.
- However, back-to-back scores by Malik Bouaoudia (Sr., Geneva, Switzerland) and Derby via penalty shot (5:10) and even-strength (4:40) strikes made it 14-2.
- Theo Fasciano (So., Newton, Mass.) and JP Faza (Fr., Orange County, Calif.) hurled in the final blows for Macalester (2:53) and NYU (1:05), respectively, to set the 15-3 final score.
- For Macalester, Fasciano, Berman and Monterroso all scored once. Daniel Cassel (Fr., San Mateo, Calif.) took the loss for the Sons of Neptune with 11 saves in cage.
- Across the tank, Derby (five), Bouaoudia (four) and Conley (three) combined for 12 of NYU’s 15 goals. Bassel Heiba Elfeky (Gr., Cairo, Egypt), Faza and Lawrence each chipped in solo markers.
- In cage, Faza turned away five shots to earn the win.
