LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The No. 6-ranked Princeton University men’s water polo team battled but came up short against the No. 1 University of California-Los Angeles Bruins, 12-10.

The Bruins held a 4-2 lead in the first quarter, but goals from Finn LeSieur and Pierce Maloney tied the score at four-all. UCLA recorded a goal with one second to go in the quarter to take 5-4 advantage into the second stanza.

This time, it was Princeton who registered a tally with one second to go as Roko Pozaric evened the score at seven-all right before the break.

UCLA scored the first two goals of the second half, but a score by Vladan Mitrovic got Princeton within one, 9-8, as the game headed into the fourth frame.

Mitrovic tied the non-conference battle at 9-all with 6:51 left, but UCLA countered with two more goals. The junior got the Tigers within striking distance with a tally at the 2:28 mark, but head coach Dustin Litvak‘s squad could not find the equalizers as the top-ranked Bruins escaped Princeton.

Kristóf Kovács had 10 saves in the loss.
