PRINCETON, N.J. — No. 12-ranked the University of California-Santa Barbara started fast and never looked back in taking a 16-7 win versus Bucknell Universty on the first day of the 2022 Princeton University Winter Tournament.  The Bison dropped 5-0 forfeit contests versus host/No. 16 Princeton and Long Island University earlier in the day.

The Gauchos scored eight goals in each half, including a 4-1 run to start the game, to pull away from Bucknell and improve to 7-1 on the season.

It took just 19 seconds for the Gauchos to get on the board on a goal from Camilla Mackay, but the Bison responded 30 seconds later when Bella Moynihan found the back of the cage at the 7:12 mark of the first quarter.

However, UC-Santa Barbara concluded the quarter with three consecutive goals over the final four minutes to take a 4-1 lead after eight minutes of competition.

Isabelle Monaghan netted Bucknell’s second goal of the game at the 7:48 mark of the second, but a 4-0 run from the Gauchos provided a commanding 8-2 lead.  Bucknell’s Bella Schraa scored her first career goal just before the end of the half to move the Bison within 8-3 heading into halftime.

The Gauchos, however, pulled away in the second half as a pair of markers from Gwen Kallmeyer and a goal by Izzy Lippolis were not enough in the second half to keep the Bison in the contest.

Courtesy the victory, UC-Santa Barbara improves to 5-0 all-time against Bucknell in women’s water polo.
