STATEN ISLAND/BROOKLYN, N.Y. — No. 13-ranked Hartwick College proved dominant in the Empire State as the Hawks shook the Spiro Sports Center in Staten Island with an 18-17 overtime victory versus the No. 12 Seahawks of Wagner College in game one on day two of the squad’s New York road trip. Following a break, Hartwick returned to the pool in another of the five boroughs to hang a 21-11 defeat upon the Terriers of St. Francis College Brooklyn at the SFC Aquatics Center in Brooklyn.
Hartwick, which suffered a 16-14 setback against Wagner on January 28 at the University of Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich., exacted its revenge against the Seahawks in their home pool by going the distance and overtime to turnback their host.
Tori Wilson (Kitchener, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute), L.J. Edwards (Encinitas, Calif./Cathedral Catholic), and Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary/Rudas) each scored four goals to account for 12 of the Hawks’ goals. Lena Kotanchyan (Moscow, Russia/Elk Island School) scored a trio of goals in the win, while Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia/St. Clares College), Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand/Takapuna Grammar School) and Charlotte Cottle (Sydney, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies College) each scored a lone goal to round out scoring for the Hawks in their first game.
Goalie Josette Santos (Huntingdon Beach, Calif./Edison) recorded 14 saves in the win.
In the second game against St. Francis Brooklyn the score stayed close at half with Hartwick holding a narrow 8-7 lead. The Hawks outscored the Terriers, 13-4, in the second half to come away with a ten-point victory.
Wilson, McKenty and Polak each scored a trio of goals to lead scoring in their match against the Terriers. Maryanna Antoniou (Glyfada, Greece/Second General High School of Glyfada), Brennan, Madison Germuska (Encinitas, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and Gina Grauer (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) each scored a pair of goals. Kotanchyan, Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, Ontario/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute), Edwards and Lissa Westerman (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) each scored a lone goal.
