GRESHAM, Ore. — Megan Wolf (Sr., Mason, Ohio) scored four times to earn Player of the Game status as Big Ten Division Champion/No. 13-ranked the Ohio State University built an 8-3 first half lead to overcome New England Division Champion Boston College, 13-6, to earn a spot in the 2018 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship Fifth Place game.
The Buckeyes will return to the water at Mt. Hood Community College on Sunday, May 6, at 10:15 a.m./1:15 p.m. to battle the victor of a consolation game between Southwest Division Champion/No. 11 the University of California-San Diego and host/Northwest Division Champion/No. 6 University of Washington. Boston College will contest the Seventh Place game at 9:00 a.m./Noon on May 6 against the fallen from the UC-San Diego-vs.-Washington game.
Ohio State took the lead for good just 24 seconds into the game when Wolf weaved through the Eagles’ defense and deposited a shot with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter for a quick 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard. Besty Trace (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Wolf cushioned the margin with man-up (5:06) and even-strength (4:25) strikes, respectively, as OSU went in front 3-0.
Heather Clark (Jr., Houston, Texas) delivered a response for Boston College by denting the twine at 3:40, but Trace torched the Eagles for a tally at 2:28 to return Ohio State’s lead to three at 4-1.
The margin continued to sway between two-to-four goals over the remainder of the first quarter as Annie Ward (Fr., San Rafael, Calif.) chipped it down to 4-2 at 2:10, Wolf and Jory Gould (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) widened the gap to 4-2 with back-to-back scores at 1:43 and 32 seconds prior to Clark connecting for a power-play conversion with one second left to make it 6-3 at the end of the first seven minutes of competition.
Neither team scored again until the Buckeyes broke free for back-to-back markers by Hannah May (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Eadyn Miller (Fr., Napoleon, Ohio) with 2:58 and 1:36 remaining in the second quarter to set the scoreboard at 8-3 in favor of Ohio State at halftime.
Boston College rallied back, however, as Clark (5:06) and Elizabeth Judge (So., Scarsdale, N.Y.) (2:48) opened the third quarter with consecutive blows to shrink the gap to 8-5.
Needing some offense to stifle the Eagles, Ohio State answered with an even-strength goal by Gould (1:17) to close out the third quarter followed by natural and man-up dimes by Paige Torbet (Gr., Mason, Ohio) and Wolf with 6:37 and 6:16 to play in the fourth quarter, respectively, to expand the lead to 11-5 with approximately six minutes left in regulation.
Judge adjudicated home a strike at 5:22 to move Boston College within 11-6, but a power-play point by Miller (4:42) and an even-strength strike from Abby Hartsell (Gr., Durham, N.C.) with 14 seconds left added some final insurance for the 13-6 win.
Wolf (four), Torbet (three), Miller (two) and Gould (two) all netted multi-goal games for the Buckeyes, while May and Hartselll stroked in single scores. Goalie Amanda Morgan (So, Worthington, Ohio) earned the win with two saves between the pipes.
Clark (three) and Judge (two) keyed the Eagles’ attack with multiple tallies to go along with a single goal by Ward.
Amanda Bolanos (Sr., Palm Springs, Calif.) went down as the goalie of record in the game for Boston College as she made one save in the first half to take the loss. Mary Holt (So., Pasadena, Calif.) closed out the contest with two saves in the second half.
